Apical Bud Under the Microscope (Longitudinal Section)

Apical Bud (Longitudinal Section), Hydrilla verticillata

Apical Bud (Longitudinal Section), prepared microscope slide

This is a lengthwise slice through the growing tip of a Hydrilla shoot, a water plant, stained with safranin. It shows where new leaves and stem tissue are made, which makes it a classic slide for teaching plant growth.

This is a longitudinal section of an apical bud from Hydrilla verticillata, a water plant, stained with safranin. The bud is the growing tip of a stem. Deep inside, wrapped by young leaves, is a small dome of dividing cells called the shoot apical meristem, which makes new stem and leaf tissue. Tiny bumps on its sides, called leaf primordia, are the first stages of new leaves, and the leaves get longer and older as they curve outward over the tip to protect it. Students can trace how a leaf grows from a bump into a full leaf.

What to look for

Questions and answers

What is the shoot apical meristem and where is it on the slide?

The shoot apical meristem is the group of dividing cells at the very tip of a stem. On a longitudinal section of an apical bud, it is the small dome at the top, surrounded by young leaves that grew out from its sides.

What are leaf primordia?

Leaf primordia are the earliest stages of new leaves. They start as small bumps on the side of the meristem and grow larger as they get farther from the tip.

Why use Hydrilla for an apical bud slide?

Hydrilla has a simple, slender shoot tip with many closely spaced leaves, so one section shows the meristem and several stages of leaf development at once.

Viewing this slide in class

This is a scan of a real prepared slide, not a simulation or a drawing. On StudyScope you can pan from the whole slide down to individual structures, always in focus, and measure them in real micrometers with the calibrated ruler. Present it live and every student screen follows your view and annotations. Students join with a room code on Chromebooks, iPads, or any browser, with no accounts.
