A cross section of a basswood stem (Tilia stem c.s.) stained with Fast Green, exhibiting classic woody dicotyledonous stem anatomy undergoes secondary growth. At the center lies a well-defined parenchymatous pith surrounded by a broad ring of secondary xylem characterized by densely packed tracheids, vessel elements, and prominent radially extending vascular rays. Surrounding the vascular cambium is the secondary phloem, organized into characteristic wedge-shaped or triangular bands alternating with dilated phloem rays. The outermost region is enclosed by a protective layer of cortex and cork cambium (phellogen) generating periderm/cork layers.
