A transverse section of a winter jasmine leaf (Jasminum nudiflorum T.S.) stained with Fast Green, demonstrating the classic bifacial dorsiventral internal architecture of a dicotyledonous lamina. Upper and lower surfaces are bounded by single-layered epidermal cells coated with a protective cuticle layer. Beneath the adaxial epidermis lies elongated, tightly packed palisade mesophyll cells specialized for light absorption during photosynthesis. The abaxial region comprises loosely arranged spongy mesophyll parenchyma with prominent intercellular air spaces that facilitate internal gas exchange. Embedded within the mesophyll layer, small vascular bundles containing lignified xylem vessels and phloem elements provide structural support and fluid transport across the leaf blade.
