This longitudinal section of an amaranth stem demonstrates the organized axial arrangement of herbaceous plant tissues. Elongated parenchyma cells form the fundamental ground tissue, flanked by outer epidermal layers and interspersed with prominent longitudinal vascular bundles. The vascular strands clearly exhibit elongated tracheary elements of the xylem with lignified secondary cell wall thickenings, accompanied by sieve tube elements and companion cells of the phloem running parallel along the stem axis. Stained predominantly with Safranin and Fast Green (or counterstained methyl blue/fast green), the differential coloration highlights the cellulose walls of ground parenchyma in cyan/green and the reinforced, lignified vascular elements.
